About Joel Stoehr

Joel Stoehr lives and works in Rockaway Beach, New York City on Jamaica Bay. His work is informed by a lifetime spent exploring rivers, marshes, coastlines, and forests - places where observation, patience, and time outdoors shape both the experience and the art that follows. Working in oil, gouache, and watercolor, Stoehr often begins each piece with field sketches and photographs made during time spent on the water or in the woods. For him, the photograph is simply a reference, a way to record a moment, while painting becomes an act of interpretation and invention, capturing the atmosphere, memory, and emotion of an experience rather than documenting it exactly as it appeared.

Stoehr is an Assistant Professor of Design at Parsons School of Design and the former Director of the BFA Product Design Program within the School of Constructed Environments. Stoehr maintains a studio practice as a visual artist. Selected exhibitions include Peirogi Gallery, Brooklyn, NY; Randolph Macon College, Ashland, VA; Corcoran Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C.; and Rare Gallery in NY, NY. Stoehr received a BFA in painting from Maryland Institute College of Art in 1998 and an MFA in sculpture from Cranbrook Academy of Art in 2001, and studied in 2001 at the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture in Skowhegan, ME.
